La Quinta is one of the largest limited-service hotel chains in the United States. There are more than 500 La Quinta Inns, spread across 41 states and Canada.

Project Overview

La Quinta wanted a simple-to-use but eye-catching mapping web application that allowed customers to find the location of their hotels across the US. The application needed to load and run quickly on any web browser and any operating system, and needed to be easily modified when new hotels opened.

Rather than designing a series of HTML pages that would have required reloading as a user navigated first to the state he wanted, then to the city, and then the hotel, La Quinta turned to Laszlo Studios to develop a Rich Internet Application in OpenLaszlo that gave users a seamless flow from the nation, to the state, to the hotel level, with eye-catching animation. Details on the hotels are available with a context-sensitive roll-over menu.

It's simple to add new hotels as La Quinta opens them - the OpenLaszlo application works with dynamic data sources like a database that stores location-based information, so the application always has the latest information.

Client Profile

Renaissance Learning’s educational software, designed for grades pre K-12, is used in more than 65,000 schools in North America. The company offers software programs, such as their flagship Accelerated Reader, and also operates learning centers that provide after-school and summer tutoring in reading and math.

Project Overview

Renaissance Learning wanted to institute a Summer Reading Program that would encourage children to read during the summer, a typically non-academic time. They wanted an engaging application that was simple to use and provided an incentive for children to read while monitoring their progress.

Laszlo Studios worked with Renaissance Learning to create a Rich Internet Application in OpenLaszlo that allowed children to browse an online catalog of books and create a Reading List, a library paradigm familiar to children. The participants in the program read books from their lists and then took quizzes online. Upon successful completion of a quiz, the students received virtual rewards - an opportunity to decorate an on-line room of their design, with a new item for each book read.

The application provided a rich user experience, tailored just for Renaisannce Learning's needs, without requiring special software to install on their customer's machines.

The project was very successful, and provided Renaissance Learning its first direct-to-consumer application.

Barclays Global Investor is one of the world’s largest administrators of institutional assets, handling the banking, investment banking and investment management needs in more than 60 countries globally.

Project Overview

When Barclays introduced a new division called iShares, they wanted a tool for their investors that would allow them to compare the return results of multiple index funds, and update the information with real-time stock data.

Laszlo Studios responded with a Rich Internet Application written in OpenLaszlo that ran in users' browsers without special plug-ins and communicated over standard web ports, allowing the application to be used behind firewalls. The Index Returns Chart application is far more interactive in presenting the information than static HTML pages and has become one of the most popular features of the Barclays iShares website, helping to generate awareness of Barclays products, and drive traffic to their site.

Due to the popularity of the Index Returns Chart following its launch, Laszlo Studios is currently working with Barclays to build additional consumer-facing applications.

SureWest Communications is one of Northern California’s largest integrated communications service providers, supplying both the residential and commercial markets.

Project Overview

SureWest wanted to provide their broadband customers with a home page that was unique; a portal that went beyond the standard HTML-based portals found elsewhere on the Web.

Laszlo Studios spent time with SureWest to understand their needs, and developed an OpenLaszlo-based portal that provides a rich, user-focused experience that can be customized by each of SureWests's 60,000 broadband customers. The portal provides a desktop-like environment with windows that can be sized and moved, displaying content from SureWest's servers.
