Laszlo Systems Ships OpenLaszlo 3.0; New Serverless Version Enhances Performance, Adds Flexibility
Now Laszlo Rich Internet Applications Can Run On Any Web Server
SAN MATEO, Calif. (April 26, 2005) - Laszlo Systems, developer of the Laszlo open source platform and provider of rich Internet applications (RIAs) and services, today announced the availability of OpenLaszlo 3.0. Previously known as Laszlo Presentation Server (LPS), the newest version of this proven platform for the development and deployment of RIAs has been re-named to OpenLaszlo to better reflect Laszlo Systems' strategic decision to move to an open source licensing model.
"Laszlo Systems' recent move to open source its presentation server has attracted a significant amount of interest from developers and ISVs who want to develop rich Internet applications," said David Boloker, chief technology officer, Emerging Internet Technologies, IBM Software Group. "Rich Web-based applications have the potential to substantially enhance the end-user experience. And we are very excited about the positive impact OpenLaszlo and IBM's IDE for Laszlo have had in this area already by providing simple easy-to-use tools that harness the power of declarative user interfaces."
OpenLaszlo 3.0 introduces two ways to deploy an application: SOLO or with the OpenLaszlo Server. Applications that provide data integration via XML over HTTP may be deployed SOLO (Standalone OpenLaszlo Output) from any HTTP Web server. This capability dramatically simplifies deployment and reduces IT costs. Applications that require data integration via SOAP, XML-RPC or Java-RPC, or that require persistent connection capabilities or run-time media transcoding are deployed with the OpenLaszlo Server within J2EE or Java Servlet Container environments. Other new features include Unicode support, the introduction of a drawing API to support charting and graphing, and performance enhancements via Dynamic Libraries and optimizations for Flash 6 and 7.
OpenLaszlo 3.0 creates unlimited possibilities for companies, ISVs, and ISPs that want to use Laszlo for Web solutions. Oliver Steele, Chief Software Architect, Laszlo Systems, said, "This is a pivotal announcement in the history of Laszlo. As the leading platform for rich Internet application development, we're excited to announce SOLO, which provides unmatched ease and flexibility to developers, companies and ISPs." He elaborated, "With SOLO, OpenLaszlo is now as easy to deploy as a DHTML application but, unlike DHTML, delivers far superior user interface capabilities and readily supports all leading Web browsers on all leading desktop operating systems without further development effort."
OpenLaszlo is free and runs on Linux, Unix, Windows, and Mac OSX. It can be downloaded at http://www.laszlosystems.com/developers/
